Dear Community Member:

In 2010, Joliet Junior College, Joliet Public Library, Forest Preserve District of Will County, Will County Land Use/Waste Services Division, Joliet Job Corps, City of Joliet and the University of Illinois Extension-Will County collaborated resources and created an annual community event called “GR2010--Celebrating Sustainability.” The goal for this month-long celebration, focusing on healthy families and sustainable communities, was aimed at creating excitement and enthusiasm for healthy lifestyles, green products, services and technologies through environmentally responsible activities of education, empowerment and entertainment.

Last year, GR2011--Celebrating Sustainability featured speakers, a film series, organic food, live music, how-to-workshops, yoga classes and earth-friendly activities for the whole family. Over 4,000 adults and children from our community participated in the month of activities, which culminated with a FREE day-long festival.

Joliet Junior College Foundation is soliciting local stakeholders to assist the nine partner organizations with underwriting the cost of this FREE public event. Sponsorship will provide an excellent opportunity for you to market your business to the local community in a sustainable and environmentally-friendly way. We need your support in making GR2012-Celebrating Sustainability another successful first-class event.

Vanishing of the Bees

Honeybees have been mysteriously disappearing across the planet, literally vanishing from their hives. Known as Colony Collapse Disorder, this phenomenon has brought beekeepers to crisis in an industry responsible for producing apples, broccoli, watermelon, onions, cherries and a hundred other fruits and vegetables. Commercial honeybee operations pollinate crops that make up one out of every three bites of food on our tables.Vanishing of the Bees follows commercial beekeepers David Hackenberg and Dave Mendes as they strive to keep their bees healthy and fulfill pollination contracts across the U.S. The film explores the struggles they face as the two friends plead their case on Capital Hill and travel across the Pacific Ocean in the quest to protect their honeybees. As scientists puzzle over the cause, organic beekeepers indicate alternative reasons for this tragic loss. Conflicting options abound and after years of research, a definitive answer has not been found to this harrowing mystery.

Is access to clean drinking water a basic human right, or a commodity that should be bought and sold like any other article of commerce? Stephanie Soechtig's debut feature is an unflinching examination of the big business of bottled water.

Name Title Description
Banks, Drusilla  Canning Basics Whether it is produce from your back-yard-garden or produce you’ve purchased from the local farmers market or supermarket, summertime is fresh vegetable time. How would you like to learn new and safe methods of preserving summer’s bounty? Today’s home canning methods are safe, quick, and easy.
Bergdall, Terry GreenRise Uptown and “Accelerate 77” in Chicago This presentation will be on the ICA’s efforts (1) to create a “green culture” within a vintage 90 year old 8-story building in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood and (2) to organize and host a city-wide conference for local neighborhood sustainability initiatives with representatives from all 77 of Chicgo’s geographical areas. This latter effort is known as “Accelerate 77.”
Bryson, Michael A. PhD The Sustainable Suburb: From Oak Park to Schaumburg to Joliet My talk assesses how different Chicago area suburban communities have embraced sustainable development, and analyzes the various challenges each of them faces in moving the region toward a more sustainable future. The presentation highlights the diversity of suburbs in its profiles of Oak Park, a highly compact and densely-populated community adjacent to Chicago and connected to the city by CTA bus and rail; Schaumburg, a late 20th-century "edge city" that developed around the automobile and represents for many the epitome of suburban sprawl; and Joliet, an old industrial/river city as old as Chicago whose history is tied to the railroad and waterways, and whose future is vitally connected to their sustainable development and enhancement.
Grace, Kari & Emmy  WWOOF World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms: A Swedish Farm Experience Have you wondered how food is grown sustainably?  Have you wondered what it’s like to live on a farm?  WWOOFing offers a truly unique experience for individuals who are interested in sustainable agriculture, different lifestyles, meeting new people, volunteering or traveling.  Join us for this presentation to learn about a Swedish WWOOFing experience.
Kaiser, Olive  Back to Great Grandma's Dinner Table, and What to Do About Gluten? Many serious health seekers today pay attention to old-fashioned dietary habits that appeared to benefit our great grandparents. Principles of these age-old agricultural traditions, food choices and preparation methods are duplicated in many diverse cultures around the world.  Learn these principles, observed by Dr, Weston A, Price in the 1930's when he undertook 10 years of travel worldwide to discover why many isolated groups were far healthier than the technologically advanced westerners. In addition, the very current question of gluten intolerance, effective testing, and implementation of the gluten free and similar diets will be explored, and the underlying role that stress and toxins play in the situation.
Neill, Andy The history and stewardship of  JJC's Natural Areas and Watershed.  Walking tour of JJC's natural areas, campus and surrounding watershed to showcase the initiatives undertaken to improve landscape and watershed quality and function.
Niemann-Boehle, Deborah  Why Homegrown and Handmade  Why on earth would anyone want to have a garden, milk goats, or bake bread from scratch? Learn why homegrown and handmade food is not only cheaper but better for you and the environment.
Nowicki, Vicki  Food Storage Session one with Vicki Nowicki, Garden Crusader will cover Canning your garden bounty and Drying your herbs and teas.  Vicki will show you how these finished product will fit into an overall scheme to plan Winter meals.
Nowicki, Vicki  Food Storage In the second session, Garden Crusader Vicki Nowicki will show you how to Freeze garden vegetables and how to use a Root Cellar.  You will now have four storage stations in your home and Vicki will show you how to draw from these stations to make delicious Winter meals!
Plagman, Emily  Energy Efficiency Project Save money on utility bills. Increase property value. Improve the comfort level in your home. All of those things can be achieved by making your home more energy efficient. In this workshop homeowners will learn about easy steps they can take to reduce your energy consumption, increase the comfort of their homes, and access financing to pay for the costs not covered by utility incentives.  Emily Plagman will present the Energy Impact Illinois program, an alliance of local and federal organizations, utility companies and not-for-profit groups dedicated to helping communities change their energy usage habits by offering access to a broad array of programs and solutions.
Roseboro, Ken  The GMO Food Threat and What You Can Do About It Genetically modified foods pose threats to human health and the environment yet these foods are widespread and unlabeled in the US food supply. In this presentation, GM food expert Ken Roseboro, gives an overview of GM foods and their risks and provides practical steps people can take to avoid them and support non-GMO food production.
Spight, Bral M.  Why hydroponics/controlled environment agriculture is a viable sustainability strategy
Talbot, Amy  Water Conservation and Efficiency for Northeastern Illinois Presentation will summarize current and future water supply conditions as documented in Water 2050: Northeastern Illinois Regional Water Supply/Demand Plan.  As part of the Water 2050 planning process, a variety of water conservation measures were discussed and evaluated. This presentation will include an overview of these measures and conclude on their associated water savings potential.  Current conservation and efficiency activities within the 11 county region will also be highlighted.
Texley, Bruce Saving the Planet one Natural Step at a Time An introduction to the  Eco-municipality movement as a local manifestation of The Natural Step, a sustainability philosophy begun in Sweden, illustrating its successes in both Sweden and North America.
Amy Tezak-Rodrigue Green Funerals Green funerals are as wide and varied as any “green” initiative. The epitome of a green funeral would be one where the loved one was not embalmed, used a shroud or all wood or cardboard containers, and was buried in a natural burial ground. However, we can all take steps to ensure that our choices in death, as well as life, have the least impact on our environment.
Tomkin, Jonathan  Online Sustainability Education in Illinois New online technologies are transforming the educational landscape. By taking advantage of these new technologies, Illinois' colleges and universities can remain leaders in sustainability education. I'll present three new projects from the University of Illinois that aim to connect sustainability education throughout the state and beyond. These are 1) a free-to-all online textbook "Sustainability: an introductory foundation"; 2) an online bachelors program in Environmental Sustainability; and 3) a cutting-edge University of Illinois class in sustainability that will be made available free to everyone via the web. Learn how you, or your organization, can take advantage of these programs.
Ward, Curt Alternately Fueled Vehicles Today A brief overview of what is constituted as an alternative fuel and the vehicles that are available for sale today that meet that requirement. The presentation will also cover some of the incentives and regulations as it relates to these vehicles.
Womack, Jay  Connecting People to Nature Through Rain Water Jay Womack will discuss ways to reconnect people to nature, both at home and at work, through the use of sustainable rain water management strategies.  Jay will show examples of rain gardens, native landscapes, green roofs, and other techniques for water management, all of which use rain water to reconnect people to nature.

Dear Art Educator,

We are writing to invite your students to participate in the GR2012 Celebrating Sustainability Student Art Exhibit which will be held May 1 through May 19, 2012!  The art will be exhibited at Gallery 7 in downtown Joliet and at the Joliet Junior College Main Campus.  The exhibit is in conjunction with the GR2012 Celebrating Sustainability Festival, which celebrates and explores sustainable practices, technologies and initiatives happening in and around Will County.

Click here for a Call for Entry outlining specific details about the exhibit, including artwork drop off dates, a printable entry form.  So that we can plan effectively, please respond to us via email by March 7th at ekendrot@jjc.edu if you are interested in participating.

For the exhibit, we are seeking student artwork exploring the topics of “sustainability” and “sustainable communities.”  The project is a great opportunity to create dialogue about environmental issues, to celebrate Earth Day (April 22nd), to connect students to the greater community, and to address topics such as healthy eating.  Project possibilities are basically endless in both topic and material (although the art must incorporate re-used or sustainable materials).

Some project ideas to consider are: creating jewelry from bottles, cans, bags and other recyclables; using photography to document the environs of students’ communities, creating artwork from found natural materials; making posters celebrating Earth Day; creating animal menageries from plastics and other recyclables; creating drawings or paintings about farmland and habitat loss or global warming; creating maps to explore open land preservation and urban planning; creating mixed media sculptures  from old toys; using found papers to create collages….  If you need assistance planning a project, we can help!

On behalf of GR2012,
